Kyokokaji Shoukei

Kyokokaji Shoukei’s story is one of dedication to tradition and adaptation to the needs of modern life. "We light the fire, forge the iron, forge the steel, and shape it with care," he says, remaining rooted in time-honored methods. For Shoukei, traditional fire-forging isn't just about achieving sharpness; it’s about preserving the passage of time within the iron itself.

As a child, Shoukei dreamed of becoming a swordsmith. But with maturity came the realization that recreating the glory of the past in objects detached from daily life might not fully honor his craft. Without the mindset of a samurai, he knew he might never reach that legendary level by forging swords alone. At 19, he decided to train under a general toolsmith, refining his skills for practical tools that would endure in the rhythms of daily use. His path eventually led him to Kyoto, where he trained under a master blacksmith and, after over a decade of intensive study, set up his own workshop in Takamine Butsudani, Kyoto.

Immersed in the art of researching ancient Japanese iron, Shoukei dedicated years to experimenting, studying, and testing prototypes to bring the traditional soul of Japanese craftsmanship into the modern world. It is through this fusion of past and present that Shoukei creates tools imbued with heritage, strength, and purpose.
